Residential Treatment Programs

What is residential treatment?

In residential treatment, clients reside at a treatment center where they go about their daily life but in a supportive environment, along with their peers. They receive frequent support from specialized therapists, doctors, and other mental health experts. This is one of the most intensive levels of care as staff members are on call 24/7. It is also more comfortable than any treatment requiring hospitalization since the environment is more peaceful and home-like. This is different from a potentially busy hospital wing.

Residential treatment facilities offer safe, effective, and evidence-based care for both adolescents and adults who have experienced negative consequences from different issues related to substance abuse, eating and food issues, addiction among others. In residential treatment, individuals have the opportunity to address emotional, behavioral, and mental needs with the guidance of licensed mental health professionals.

One of the treatment focuses of a residential treatment facility is a holistic approach to healing. This provides the time needed to do so. Inpatient treatment at a hospital will primarily focus on stabilizing a person physically. Talk therapy will focus primarily on increased mental health over time, however, residential treatment will provide both at once. Residential treatment will, for example, take advantage of medical doctors and psychiatrists when needed but also partake in therapeutic activities such as music therapy and yoga. This is to promote whole mind and body healing.

Why choose residential treatment?

Every person has a unique mental health journey. It is important to provide a personalized program for each patient. This is one of the great benefits of residential mental health treatment because it gives you the greatest chance of success.

Many people choose residential mental health treatment because of many benefits including:

In most situations, traditional therapy specifically takes place in a counselor's office. It does not remove the patient from the situation, they are still around the places, people, and things that could potentially act as triggers and reminders or challenges of the struggle. Residential therapy will remove the individual entirely from their environment and offer them a place to start over and craft healthy productive habits and ways of life for themselves.

In most residential treatment facilities, cognitive behavioral therapy, (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), medication management, family support groups, medication-assisted treatment, and individual and group therapy that serves the client in all areas. This will thoroughly prepare them for life after treatment.

Certain mental health conditions do not endanger the life of a patient. However, others will pose a threat to the safety of the patient. Residential treatment provides a haven with constant supervision for anyone requiring continuous access to medical assistance.

Anyone who goes through the residential treatment does so with other peers who experience the same program. This is incredibly helpful both during the program and after the treatment. During the time they are in the residential treatment facility, they can process the experiences together. After they leave, they have a support group on which to rely who understands. The journey on a personal level creates quite a strong and special bond that is not to be taken for granted.

What kinds of disorders do residential programs treat?

Residential programs treat substance abuse and mental health disorders, which can include a wide spectrum of addictions and mood disorders. Addiction and mental health issues are often co-occurring and should be addressed at the same time, which is known as dual diagnosis treatment. Some psychiatric conditions and substance withdrawal symptoms can be quite severe and may require close observation, supervision, and medical care, which is why having access to an in-patient program with an excellent clinical staff is so important.

How long are inpatient rehab programs?

It depends on the needs of the client, and what their financial circumstances will allow. Inpatient programs can be anywhere from 30-90 days, although some treatment centers offer longer treatment programs.

What should I look for in an inpatient program?

There are a number of factors that can determine if a treatment program is right for you. The most important thing to look for is to make sure that the treatment center you are considering specializes in the disorder or issue you need assistance with, and to decide if their treatment approach is right for you. Some treatment centers are more clinically focused, while others have a more holistic approach and offer alternative therapies in addition to traditional forms of therapy, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

Is residential treatment a good option for me?

Residential treatment is a good option for patients who have had little success with other forms of therapy or levels of care. Residential treatment offers a tailor-made treatment plan for anyone who struggles with; depression, anxiety, mood disorders, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), dual diagnosis, substance abuse, and eating disorders.

A primary concern associated with residential treatment facilities is that they are expensive. There is a significant social-economic divide concerning healing and recovery and options are available to those who seek treatment but cannot afford high costs may be limited. However, if an individual struggling with an addiction can afford their stay at a residential treatment facility, it is worth the expense.
